3. Content. For the Summary section, and under each job description, there are two basic rules for content. One is to make sure the information is relevant. One of the biggest mistakes I see is spending too much time describing the company, and not enough time describing what the employee did. Unless the client is the Founder or President of the company, any more than one line spent describing it is too much.
Now you might ask: what's wrong with using that Word template? Well, first of all, it's made for EVERYONE to use. Can all professionals relate to your level of achievement? I doubt it.
A resume is essential when looking for a job. If you don't believe me, try conducting your job search without one. Even if your lucky enough get an interview without a resume, you will be faced with explaining why you do not have one when someone ask you for your resume at the interview. More than ever before, employers require resumes. And, more than ever before, employers will use your resume to determine whether not to grant you an interview.
Resume writing is an expert craft that calls for a very unique combination of strategic thinking abilities, strong creativity and writing skills, and up-to-date knowledge of the employment market and resume trends. You should look for professionals who write from "scratch" and create unique resumes for every single client. Templates are a no-no as they give your resume a "cookie-cutter" look that just makes you blend in rather than stand out. By viewing past work, you can gain a sense of the professional's style and their attention to detail. Showing you actual unedited samples would be a red flag to avoid that provider as they would be violating client confidentiality. However, most firms have at least a few projects which they have "neutralized," removing or changing all identifying data so that they can show them to prospects. Many resume writers actually publish samples on the web and contribute to books on resume writing. You should never hire a writer without first reviewing their portfolio of examples and being certain you are happy with their style and quality.
